Days after being bestowed with the title of Mahamandaleshwar by the Kinnar Akhara during the Maha Kumbh, former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni was stripped of the honour owing to internal conflict.
After only seven days, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi and Mamta Kulkarni were expelled from the Kinnar Akhara by its founder, Ajay Das.
The announcement of the 1990s actress Mamta Kulkarni becoming a sanyasi surprised many. Several saints and sages raised objections to her attaining sainthood in a day. Many questioned her penance and whether she genuinely possessed knowledge of the scriptures. Kulkarni gave an answer to many such questions on the popular television show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’.
On India TV’s show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’, Mamta Kulkarni faced incisive questioning from host Rajat Sharma. Discussing her decision to embrace spirituality, the actress also addressed a return to films, calling it ‘completely impossible’. “I cannot even imagine working in films again. Now it is absolutely impossible for me,” she said.
In a video from the show, which has since gone viral, Kulkarni was seen being questioned about the Vedas and scriptures following her sanyas initiation. She responded by assuming a cross-legged position with her eyes closed and began chanting. However, her recitation of the mantra was incorrect, leading to widespread criticism and ridicule online.

Mamta Kulkarni’s spiritual journey, though described by her as deeply satisfying, was abruptly interrupted shortly after it began when she was expelled from the Kinnar Akhara. Her appointment had faced significant opposition from within the Akhara.
Reports indicate that this expulsion arose from a deeper conflict between Kinnar Akhada founder Ajay Das and Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi. Allegedly, Das threatened to remove Tripathi from his position, a claim Tripathi refuted, asserting that Das lacked the authority. This clash fuelled further controversy within the Akhara, ultimately leading to the expulsion of both Tripathi and Kulkarni from their positions.
Mamta Kulkarni was a leading Bollywood actress of the 1990s. She acted in numerous Hindi films and is renowned for her roles in films like ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), ‘Baazi’ (1995), and ‘China Gate’ (1998). As one of the lead actresses of that era, she earned popularity for her acting skills and glamorous image.
