Gurpreet Singh from UP’s Pilibhit spent Rs 22 lakh to reach the US via the UK using an illegal route. He was deported by the US government and is now being questioned by the Delhi Police

The US government recently deported 104 Indian citizens residing illegally in America. Among them was a man from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi Police have been questioning him since his arrival in Punjab. According to reports, the deportee, Gurpreet Singh, is a resident of Banjaria village, situated near Puranpur town in Pilibhit.
According to Gurpreet’s mother, Jaswinder Kaur, her son went to the UK about two years ago. He had remained in England since then. About 22 days ago, he informed his family that he had reached the US by travelling a perilous and irregular route.
After arriving in US from UK, the family lost contact with their son. They have now learned that he was deported from the US. Since Gurpreet’s deportation, his family has been trying to reach him. Gurpreet is the youngest of three brothers. His eldest brother, Gurdev Singh, also known as Gurjeet, serves in the Indian Army.
Gurpreet’s family and neighbours, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the family’s financial situation is precarious. To improve his family’s circumstances, Gurpreet had been seeking employment since completing his studies. It was during this period that he made the decision to seek opportunities abroad.
In September 2022, Gurpreet travelled to London with the assistance of a local agent, incurring an expense of approximately Rs 20-25 lakh. Upon arrival, he secured employment with a factory and construction company. However, when Gurpreet encountered a scarcity of work opportunities, he was introduced to an agent who offered him a promising job in America in exchange for a substantial sum of money.
Despite this, the agent sent him to the US a few months ago illegally via the ‘donkey’ route. He was apprehended by US Border Control on January 13 while crossing the border.
Subsequently, the US government deported Gurpreet along with other Indian citizens. Recently, local police brought Gurpreet to Pilibhit, where he is currently being interrogated. Gurpreet’s mother awaits her son’s return home.
