The much-awaited Ludhiana-Bathinda highway project, abandoned last year due to land acquisition issues, has resumed with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) taking possession of almost all the acquired land. The 75.54 km six-lane greenfield highway is the fifth largest NHAI project.

Apart from this, the work of the Centre’s flagship Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is also in full swing. More than 95 percent of the total land required was handed over to NHAI by the concerned district administrations, after which the project is expected to start.

This is a welcome news for the Punjab government, as NHAI had postponed various highway projects due to the non-availability of land in the state. The state government swung into action after Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari took notice of the matter.

On the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the then Chief Secretary Anurag Verma had interacted with the protesting farmers and held weekly meetings with the concerned district civil and police officers to ensure possession of pending land for the revival of NHAI projects.

The NHAI has now floated tenders to resume construction of the new highway. The local administration says that out of the total 33.043 km under Package 2 of the Ludhiana-Bathinda Highway project, possession of 29.5 km has been handed over to NHAI.

According to NHAI officials, the entire land for the 12.2 km stretch of Package 2 falling under Barnala district and 30.3 km of Package 1 falling under Bathinda (13.2 km) and Barnala (17.1 km) has also been made available, after which the process of resuming the stalled work on the project has been initiated.

A total of 323.52 hectares of land was required to construct the 45.243 km stretch of the highway under the jurisdiction of Ludhiana district, for which a total allocation of Rs 544.36 crore was deposited and distributed to the landowners.

The new Ludhiana-Bathinda Expressway will pass through 36 villages in three districts. The highway will pass through 36 villages in Ludhiana and Raikot tehsils, Barnala and Tapa tehsils and Rampura Phul tehsil in Bathinda district.
