Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light Falls Short At DGA Awards To RaMell Ross
Payal Kapadia’s directorial All We Imagine As Light is making waves as it has bagged nominations in several award ceremonies. However, unfortunately, the film is failing to bag any trophy. The filmmaker has now lost out to RaMell Ross of Nickel Boys fame in the Michael Apted First Time Directorial Feature category at the 77th edition of the Directors Guild of America Awards.
Nickel Boys tells the gripping story of two young African-American men who form a profound friendship while enduring the brutal challenges of a reform school in Florida. The film is inspired by Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
Other nominees in the category were Megan Park for My Old Ass, Halfdan Ullmann Tondel for Armand, and Sean Wang for Didi.
The Directors Guild of America (DGA), which champions the creative and professional rights of filmmakers in the U.S. and beyond, celebrated excellence in storytelling during its prestigious awards ceremony on Saturday night (February 8).
Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, hailed as one of the most internationally acclaimed films of 2024, earned the prestigious Cannes Grand Prix. The film also marks the celebrated director’s impressive feature debut. Recently, it had failed to bag a trophy at the Critics Choice Awards where it was in the running for Best Foreign Film category. The trophy had slipped away into the hands of Emilia Perez. Among the other nominees were Flow (Latvia), I’m Still Here (Brazil), Kneecap (Ireland), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Germany).
All We Imagine As Light had also lost the award for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. The film, which was nominated alongside Emilia Perez, I’m Still Here, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig was won by Emilia Perez once again.
The film wasn’t chosen as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025 as well. The India-French co-production follows the story of two Malayali women Prabha and Anu and their friend and cook Parvaty. It shows how they navigate longing, love and loss in Mumbai.
