Harmeet Singh, the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, who has succeeded GP Singh, has come up with an innovative approach to connect with the police force.
The Assam Police, through their Twitter handle, has shared posters outlining this initiative. Serving or retired police personnel seeking assistance or wishing to share grievances can directly message the DGP on 6036903439. Additionally, those interested in scheduling a meeting with the DGP can use the same WhatsApp number or send an email to the DGP’s official email address.
The message on Twitter reads: “Any serving or retired Police personnel & staff who require assistance or wish to share a grievance, can please message the DGP, Assam, directly via WhatsApp on the following number: 6026903429.”
For the general public, a separate helpline number, 6026903488, has been provided to reach out to the DGP.
The message for the public states: “If you wish to meet DGP then drop message in this number 6026903488 or mail him dgpassam.appointment@gmail.com.”
Sources within the Assam Police reveal that had also undertaken similar efforts to engage with the police force. This initiative, according to a senior police officer, helps maintain morale within the ranks.
This outreach to the public stems from the belief that the police should be approachable and helpful to the common man. Providing a direct line of communication to the DGP empowers citizens to voice their concerns.
The initiative also aims to address the concerns of police personnel, from constables to senior officers, both serving and retired. This WhatsApp channel offers a platform for them to freely express their issues.
A senior officer told News18: “Suppose one retired constable has given everything in his life to forces and after retirement he has nobody to look after and he needs help, then this number will help him. After all police is family. Honourable Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sharma has done so much for cops, this type of programme is definitely needed. Not only that transfer posting or some grievances of forces can also be addressed.”
The demanding nature of police work, often requiring 24/7 commitment and involving personal risk, leaves them with limited social interaction. This outreach programme, many believe, serves as a significant morale booster for the Assam Police.
