The Chinese artificial intelligence startup’s chatbot surged to become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App Store, displacing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and rattling America’s tech sector.

Fears of upheaval in the AI gold rush rocked Wall Street on Monday following the emergence of a popular ChatGPT-like model from China, with US President Donald Trump saying it was a “wake-up call” for Silicon Valley.

Last week’s release of the latest DeepSeek model initially received limited attention, overshadowed by the inauguration of Trump on the same day.

However, over the weekend, the Chinese artificial intelligence startup’s chatbot surged to become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App Store, displacing OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

What truly rattled the industry was DeepSeek’s claim that it developed its latest model, the R1, at a fraction of the cost that major companies are investing in AI development, primarily on expensive Nvidia chips and software.

The development is significant given the AI boom, ignited by ChatGPT’s release in late 2022, has propelled Nvidia to become one of the world’s most valuable companies.

The news sent shockwaves through the US tech sector, exposing a critical concern: should tech giants continue to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into AI investment when a Chinese company can apparently produce a comparable model so economically?

DeepSeek’s apparent advances were a poke in the eye to Washington and its priority of thwarting China by maintaining American technological dominance.

‘Wake-Up Call For US’

Trump reacted quickly on Monday, saying the DeepSeek release “should be a wake-up call for our industries that we need to be laser-focused on competing to win.”

He argued that it could be a “positive” for US tech giants, adding: “instead of spending billions and billions, you’ll spend less, and you’ll come up with hopefully the same solution.”

The development also comes against a background of a US government push to ban Chinese-owned TikTok in the United States or force its sale.

David Sacks, Trump’s AI advisor and prominent tech investor, said DeepSeek’s success justified the White House’s decision to reverse executive orders, issued under Joe Biden, that established safety standards for AI development.

The regulations “would have hamstrung American AI companies without any guarantee that China would follow suit,” Sacks wrote on X.

Adam Kovacevich, CEO of the tech industry trade group Chamber of Progress, echoed the sentiment: “Now the top AI concern has to be ensuring (the United States) wins.”

Tech investor and Trump ally Marc Andreessen declared “Deepseek R1 is AI’s Sputnik moment,” referencing the 1957 launch of Earth’s first artificial satellite by the Soviet Union that stunned the Western world.

“If China is catching up quickly to the US in the AI race, then the economics of AI will be turned on its head,” warned Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, in a note to clients.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took to social media hours before markets opened to argue less expensive AI was good for everyone.

But last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Nadella warned: “We should take the developments out of China very, very seriously.”

Microsoft, an eager adopter of generative AI, plans to invest $80 billion in AI this year, while Meta announced at least $60 billion in investments on Friday.

Nvidia Faces Stunning Losses

Much of that investment goes into the coffers of Nvidia, whose shares plunged a staggering 17 percent on Monday.

The situation is particularly remarkable since DeepSeek, as a Chinese company, lacks easy access to Nvidia’s state-of-the-art chips after the US government placed export restrictions on them.

The esteemed Stratechery tech newsletter and others suggested that DeepSeek’s innovations stemmed from necessity, as lacking access to powerful Nvidia-designed chips forced them to develop novel methods.

The export controls are “driving startups like DeepSeek to innovate in ways that prioritize efficiency, resource-pooling, and collaboration,” wrote the MIT Technology Review.

Elon Musk, who has invested heavily in Nvidia chips for his company xAI, suspects DeepSeek of secretly accessing banned H100 chips — an accusation also made by the CEO of ScaleAI, a prominent Silicon Valley startup backed by Amazon and Meta.

But such accusations “sound like a rich kids team got outplayed by a poor kids team,” wrote Hong Kong-based investor Jen Zhu Scott on X.

In a statement, Nvidia said DeepSeek’s technology was “fully export control compliant.”

Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay with Al-Hilal by mutual consent. The 32-year-old played just seven times since joining in August 2023

Brazilian star Neymar on Monday ended his injury-plagued 18 month stay in Saudi Arabia as his club, Al-Hilal said they had “agreed to terminate the player’s contract by mutual consent”.

“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career with Al-Hilal, and wish the player success in his career,” said a club statement posted on social media.

The 32-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward played just seven times since joining the club in August 2023, despite a reported salary of around $104 million a year.

Neymar, the subject of what is still the biggest transfer in football history when he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2017 for a fee of 220 million euros ($230 million at), joined Al-Hilal in August 2023.

He followed fellow superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the lucrative Saudi league.

But two months after his arrival in Riyadh, he ruptured a cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in October 2023, which kept him on the sidelines for a year.

He returned for Al Hilal with two brief appearances in October and November but injured a hamstring and has not played since. He said he is targeting the World Cup.

The club’s coach Jorge Jesus said recently: “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

Earlier in January, Neymar said he was aiming to play in the 2026 in the US, Canada and Mexico.

‘Last shot’

“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it,” he told CNN.

While Neymar had been curted by MLS teams in the United States, reports in Brazil said Santos, the club where Neymar made his name in his now fading career, was in talks for him to return to his homeland.

A return to Brazil would likely be the last chance for a player who is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

At the start of his career he was cast as the heir to Pele.

After scoring 107 goals in 177 appearances for Santos, he joined Barcelona in 2013, becoming the young star of a team that also featured Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, which swept to the Champions League title in 2015 by beating Juventus 3-1 in the final in Berlin.

A year later he scored the winning penalty in a shootout as Brazil won the men’s football gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He won five Ligue 1 titles and he and prolific French forward Kylian Mbappe led PSG to the final of the Champions League in the Covid-blighted 2019-2020, but they lost to Bayern Munich.

PSG reunited Neymar with Messi in the French capital, but the trio with Mbappe failed to gel as personal rivalries got in the way and he was pushed to the exit, and to Saudi Arabia, by the Parisian management in 2023.

Wall Street’s superstars are tumbling as a competitor from China threatens to upend the artificial-intelligence frenzy they’ve been feasting on.

The S&P 500 fell 1.5 per cent Monday. Big Tech stocks took some of the heaviest losses, with Nvidia down nearly 17 per cent, and they dragged the Nasdaq composite down 3.1 per cent.

Besides chip companies, utilities hoping to electrify power-hungry AI data centres also tumbled. Stocks outside of AI-related industries held up much better, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7 per cent.

Ramandeep played in the last two matches of the T20I series against South Africa in November 2024, whereas Dube’s last T20I appearance for India was against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on July 30, 2024. The member of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning team could get preference over Ramandeep due to seniority despite Ramandeep being a better resource than him with the bat.

There is also a possibility where both Dube and Ramandeep could feature, but for such a scenario, one out of Ravi Bishnoi or Washington Sundar will have to warm the bench.

Star fast bowler Mohammed Shami was not included in India’s playing XI for the first two matches of the ongoing series, and there are not many chances of him playing in the third match as well. Shami is going to be a key player for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and the Indian team management would not like to rush him.

India will have high hopes from Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma once again in the third T20I, and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will also be eager to play a big knock and contribute to the team’s series win.

A year later, he founded Servants of the People Society, a non-profit welfare organisation to empower the Hindu society to fight their own battle against the caste system, position of women and untouchability. He believed everyone should be allowed to read and learn from the Vedas irrespective of their caste or gender.
10. One of the key moments in Rai’s historical legacy was the non-violent march that he led against the Simon Commission in 1928. Then superintendent of police, James A. Scott ordered the police to lathi-charge the protesters and personally assaulted Rai. Having been seriously injured in the protests, Rai failed to recover and passed away on November 17, 1928.

Apart from playing a crucial role in India’s freedom movement, Lala Lajpat Rai was also an eloquent speaker and openly voiced his ideas to inspire the audience and motivate them. The reality show will see contestants like Archana Gautam, Abhijeet Sawant, Tejasswi Prakash, and Gaurav Khanna competing to impress their fans with their culinary creations. While we are sure that viewers are delighted, the promos show that the journey may not be so easy for the contestants. Indian Idol 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant’s cooking struggles were visible in a promo shared by Sony TV.

The clip shows director Farah Khan, who is one of the judges, chatting with Abhijeet Sawant as he makes egg lababdar. The singer showed off his musical talent, crooning his hit track Mohabbatein Lutaaunga as he prepared his dish. The singer gave the song a twist as he promised to cook food as well as sing. Farah Khan urged him to ensure that his cooking was as good as his singing. However, it seems his efforts might not have been up to the mark, with chef Vikas Khanna advising him on how to plate a dish.

Later on, the promo shows Abhijeet talking about the pressures he faced while plating the dish, confessing that it was very difficult for him.

The Bigg Boss winner said that she wanted to express the love that she has for her fans via Celebrity MasterChef. She promised to make something special for her fans.

Earlier, chef Vikas Khanna had opened up about his experiences and career struggles. The promo starts with Farah Khan introducing Vikaas Khanna and praising his talents. The Michelin Star chef spoke up on how he was determined to put Indian food on the map. He talked about persevering with Indian food, despite all of his classmates opting to learn western cuisines. Khanna also said that he was certain that the era of “desi food” would arrive when he travelled to America.

Chef Vikas Khanna, Ranveer Brar and Farah Khan are the judges on Celebrity MasterChef. The show will air from Monday to Friday at 8 pm.

Produced by Maddock Films, the movie recorded a 55 percent drop on Day 4 compared to its opening day. After a decent weekend, Sky Force managed to collect Rs 6 crore on Monday, taking its total earnings to Rs 70 crore net at the Indian box office, according to Pinkvilla.

The film opened to a strong start, earning Rs 13.75 crore on January 24. Boosted by the Republic Day holiday, it garnered Rs 23.75 crore on Day 2 and Rs 26.50 crore on Day 3. Despite the promising weekend, the steep drop on Monday reflects an underlying challenge.

A significant factor behind the weekend’s numbers was the heavy discounts on ticket prices. The makers strategically reduced ticket prices, offering rates as low as Rs 20 to Rs 50 in several theaters. These discounts, which brought standard ticket prices down from Rs 250–500, played a key role in drawing audiences and pushing the film’s initial box office performance.

It remains to be seen how Sky Force will perform in the coming days without similar offers driving footfall.

Directed by Abhishek Anil Kapur and Sandeep Kewlani, Sky Force draws inspiration from the Indo-Pakistani air war of 1965, focusing on the Sargodha airbase attack in Pakistan.

In a 2022 interview, TJ Miller, who played Weasel in the Deadpool films, described an unpleasant experience with Ryan Reynolds.

T.J. Miller’s allegations against Ryan Reynolds during their time on the Deadpool set have resurfaced amidst Reynolds and his actress-wife Blake Lively’s ongoing legal battle with It Ends With Us director-actor Justin Baldoni. In a 2022 interview on The Adam Carolla Show, Miller, who played Weasel in the Deadpool films, described an unpleasant experience with Reynolds, claiming the lead actor was “horrifically mean” to him.

“As the character, he was, like, horrifically mean to me. But to me. As if I’m Weasel,” Miller said, reflecting on their on-set interactions. He recalled a specific comment Reynolds allegedly made, saying, “He was like, ‘You know what’s great about you, Weasel? You’re not the star, but you do just enough exposition that it’s funny, and then we can leave and get back to the real movie.’”

Miller found the remark odd, attributing it to Reynolds’ potential insecurities. “I think he said that because I’m not funnier than he is at all, right?
