A deeply disturbing incident has come to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Barsana. The Mahant of an ashram stands accused of sexually assaulting a young man from Delhi who had sought refuge in the ashram, yearning to embrace the life of a sannyasi.
When the victim attempted to flee from his tormentor, he was forcibly detained. The police, in a shocking display of apathy, have merely registered a case of assault, trivialising the gravity of the crime. The victim has appealed to the Senior Superintendent of Police, desperately seeking justice.
The victim, hailing from Delhi, had recently encountered a sadhu named Nishant, also known as Nand Gopal, who held the position of Mahant at the Mahal Vrindavan Bhajan Kutir Radha Nagari in Barsana. According to the young man’s account, Nishant alias Nand Gopal had lured him to Barsana under the pretence of guiding him towards sannyas. Upon their arrival, the young man was housed at Mahal Vrindavan Bhajan Kutir Barsana.
On January 12, taking advantage of the absence of the chief Mahant of Bhajan Kutir Radha Mohan Das, Nishant alias Nand Gopal allegedly subjected the young man to sexual assault. When the victim, desperate to break free from his tormentor’s clutches, attempted to escape, he was forcibly confined to a room and held captive against his will.
The victim has also claimed that Nishant alias Nand Gopal has a history of subjecting young men to the barbaric practice of emasculation, and that he harboured the same sinister intentions towards him. He claimed that the police have failed to acknowledge the gravity of the crime by not registering a case under the pertinent sections of rape.
