Delhi Metro displayed advertisements inside its coaches promoting “Parents’ Worship Day”, featuring images of rape convict Asaram Bapu. The 83-year-old self-styled godman has been serving life imprisonment in two rape cases and is out on interim bail till March 31 this year on medical grounds.

In April 2018, a Jodhpur court sentenced Asaram to life in prison for raping a minor at his ashram in 2013. Later, in January 2023, a Gujarat court convicted him again for raping a Surat-based woman, who was his ex-disciple, at his Motera ashram in Ahmedabad, sentencing him to life imprisonment for rape, criminal intimidation, and wrongful confinement.

The advertisements drew sharp criticism from a lawyer, who slammed Delhi Metro for showcasing ads featuring rape convict Asaram Bapu.

“Shame Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC),” the lawyer wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

He questioned, “How can Delhi Metro allow a criminal who is convicted under rape charges, and spending his conviction inside the jail, endorse his posters, pics etc inside the Delhi Metro?”

“Highly shameful act by Delhi Metro,” the lawyer, who goes by “The Legal Man” on X further expressed.

The ad proposes replacing Valentine’s Day with “Parents’ Worship Day”, claiming that this observance represents “True Love Day”.

“DMRC has issued immediate instructions to the licensee to get these advertisements removed from the Metro premises at the earliest. The process of removal of these ads shall be started tonight. However, it may take some time for their removal from the system,” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
