Not only did IndiGo serve the pre-diabetic passenger his meal minutes before landing in Delhi, but his seat’s call light also went unanswered for nearly 30 minutes.

“Never flying IndiGo again!” is what a doctor wrote on social media after his recent Bengaluru-to-Delhi flight became a nightmare. As a borderline diabetic, the doctor prefers eating on time to avoid overeating or skipping meals. He had pre-booked a sandwich for the flight, but despite making multiple requests, it was not served until the plane was descending.

Dr Datta, whose X (formerly Twitter) bio reads that he left AIIMS Delhi to bring AI to everyone by 2025, shared his frustrating experience on the flight. After waiting for his pre-booked meal, he was served black coffee instead of the black tea he had requested. He also mentioned that his seat’s call light went unanswered for nearly 30 minutes.

“We took off around 3:30 PM, and soon after, meal service began. When the crew came to my seat, they informed me that my pre-booked meal might be delayed due to an issue in Bangalore. I was patient, understanding that delays sometimes happen,” Dr Datta wrote.

He added, “After waiting for about half an hour, I politely asked if there was any problem. A crew member replied that another colleague would serve me. Despite this, I received no further update, and I was really starting to get pissed off as they very comfortably were just ignoring me!”

The doctor further shared that a passenger offered him her sandwich at around 4 PM but he was super pissed by then and turned on the emergency call light.

“Then came the breaking point: the captain announced that we were already descending, yet there was still no word on my meal or response to the emergency light,” Dr Datta further said.

The man received his meal at around 5:40 PM, minutes before the landing. However, he received black coffee instead of black tea.

“By that time I was so hypoglycaemic that I did not even have the energy or strength to argue! What really shocked me was that the calling light on my seat went unanswered for nearly 30 minutes. With an empty seat beside me, I couldn’t help but wonder how the situation would have been handled if I were in a true medical emergency!” he went on to say.

Dr Datta said that he would escalate this to the national consumer forum as “passengers deserve better”.

He added, “Indigo’s crew displayed an appalling level of unprofessionalism and arrogance. No apologies. No explanation. And after all the waiting, they handed me black coffee when I’d asked for black tea. (Again I have on record, should they deny!)”
