The Maharashtra government has dropped five lakh women from the Ladki Bahin scheme, citing non-compliance with eligibility criteria.

Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare announced this decision on social media platform X, stating that beneficiaries who did not meet the guidelines have been dropped.

Launched before the Maharashtra assembly elections, the scheme provides Rs 1,500 per month to women from financially weak backgrounds. However, a recent government review found that many ineligible beneficiaries were availing the aid, prompting this revision. Those removed include 2.3 lakh women already benefiting from the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Scheme, 1.1 lakh women above 65 years of age, and 1.6 lakh women whose family members own a four-wheeler, those receiving benefits under the Namo Shakti Scheme, or those who voluntarily opted out.

The government claims this move ensures that only truly eligible women receive financial assistance. However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the effort to streamline welfare schemes, while others fear it may affect genuinely needy women.

Amid these changes, discussions are going on about a possible increase in the scheme’s financial aid. Mahayuti leaders had earlier promised to raise the monthly amount to Rs 2,100, and many are now waiting for the upcoming state budget session to see if this commitment will be fulfilled.

With Maharashtra’s budget announcement expected next month, all eyes are on whether the government will expand financial support or continue revising eligibility criteria.

Tatkare posted the scrutiny results and also stated: “The state government of Maharashtra is committed to extending the benefits of this scheme to all eligible women.”
