NewJeans’ Hanni recently sparked conversation by sharing Chappell Roan’s powerful Grammy speech, where the singer called out music agencies for mistreating artists, especially “developing artists.” Roan, who won Best New Artist, urged them to offer fair wages, health insurance and better treatment, just like other employees. She ended with the question, “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” Hanni, who is currently involved in a legal battle with HYBE and ADOR over claims of workplace bullying, reshared the speech on her Instagram story. Majority believed that this was a bold move by Hanni, but there were few who couldn’t agree. People claimed that Roan was simply asking for fair treatment to new artists, but Hanni has got everything.

Roan said, “I told myself, if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels in the industry, profiting millions of dollars off of artists, would offer a liveable wage in health care, especially to developing artists. I got signed so young, I got signed as a minor and when I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt and like most people, I had a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and could not afford health insurance.”

“It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to have to not have health and if my label would have prioritized artist health, I could have been provided care by a company I was giving everything to. So, record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a liveable wage and health insurance and protection. Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” Chappell Roan concluded.

During one of the previous trials, NewJeans’ Hanni told the court, “There are differences between artists and trainee contracts, but there’s also something similar, it’s that we’re all humans. I think people missed that part.”

When the judge asked, “So you hope things will be handled better in the future?” She responded, “If I say I hope things will go well in the future, it feels like we’re just going to move past this before talking about the future. I hope we resolve the current situation.”

Her powerful appeal wasn’t just admired by fans, but lawyers as well. One of the attorneys in the court could be heard saying, “As you said earlier, it’s not just for NewJeans but for other artists too, they will be able to continue to grow in better conditions in the music industry. I hope you know that a lot of our citizens are rooting for NewJeans.”

As of now, NewJeans members, Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein, are in a process of relaunching themselves with a new name.
