Sanya Malhotra’s social drama Mrs has hit OTT after winning laurels at many international festivals. The film narrates the plight of Indian women who find their voices muted within the patriarchal walls of domesticity, post their marriage. Ahead of the film’s release on Zee5 today February 7, the actress opened up on Mrs’ reception and why she decided to lead the film.
In a conversation with PTI, Sanya Malhotra said that she knows that some people are getting triggered by Mrs, while others are getting emotional looking at their story being featured in a film. She said that this was why the makers decided to direct Mrs. Sanya noted that the film was very personal for her and remains relevant as she knows people who have gone through similar circumstances as the protagonist Richa.
She said, “I know people around me, including a close friend, who have faced similar challenges as Richa.”
Directed by Aarti Kadav, Mrs revolves around a young woman who holds a passion for dancing, struggling to find her voice after her marriage to a successful man. It shows her journey as she deals with endless social expectations and finally forges her own path.
For those who do not know, Mrs is an official remake of the 2021 Malayalam drama film The Great Indian Kitchen. Talking about adapting the film, the Jawan actress revealed that she had already seen the original when it came to her. Hence, it helped her resonate with the character more. “The idea was to make the film more palatable for the North Indian audiences,” she said.
Sanya further added that she did not get the opportunity to meet Nimisha Sajayan, who played her character in the original Malayalam drama film. However, she could relate to the character as it unfortunately reflects the reality of several Indian women.
Sanya won the Best Actress award for her performance in Mrs at the 2024 New York Indian Film Festival. The actress also received a standing ovation for her portrayal at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024. Apart from her, Mrs features actors Nishant Dahiya, Siya Mahajan, and Kanwaljit Singh in key roles.
