Lab-grown meat dog treats are now available in the UK, with makers claiming that the products are a world-first.
Chick Bites will have a limited release at one pet store from Friday, but Meatly plans to expand production for wider availability as scaling progresses.
Chick Bites, made by Pets at Home, makes meat-based dog treats combining plant-based ingredients with lab-grown chicken. The company says it eliminates the need of killing and slaughtering animals.
The cultivated meat is made by Meatly which plans to expand production for wider availability as scaling progresses. The company said the meat originates from a single chicken egg cell sample which generates enough meat to make pet food indefinitely.
The company said that the lab-grown chicken preserves the flavor and nutritional benefits of traditional chicken breast, offering essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins vital for pet health.
In July, the UK became the first European country to approve cultivated meat for pet food. Meatly’s chicken gained approval from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, as well as the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Pets at Home claims to be the first company globally to offer cultivated meat for pet food.
“We’re incredibly excited to introduce cultivated meat to the pet world. Just two years ago this felt like a moon shot. Today we take off. It’s a giant leap forward, toward a significant market for meat which is healthy, sustainable and kind to our planet and other animals,” Meatly founding chief executive Owen Ensor was quoted as saying by The Independent.
“We are thrilled to be working with Owen and the team to provide cultivated meat pet food products to our customers for the first time in the world. This innovation has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of pet food and will be a game-changer for the industry,” COO of Pets at Home Anja Madsen said.
