Upgrading and transforming the way cities in Uttar Pradesh are connected, work is underway in at least 96 national highway projects with a collective length of close to 2,600 km. At least 77 of these projects – collective length 1,930 km – will be completed in 2025.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said some of the ongoing national highway (NH) projects in Uttar Pradesh are delayed due to various reasons, including bottlenecks relating to land acquisition, statutory clearances, permissions, utility shifting, encroachment, law and order, as well as financial crunch of concessionaire and contractor.

The longest of these is the 100-km project on NH-9, which connects Hapur Bypass and Moradabad. The deadline for this road is June this year and it has achieved 98 percent physical progress so far. Close to 80 km of the four-laning of the Gorakhpur-Sonauli Section of NH-29E (new NH-24) is also underway and is expected to be ready by October.

With over 98 per cent of the work already completed, the four-laning of Raebareli-Prayagraj section on NH-30 will be ready soon as its deadline of February 10 is four days away. This 63-km section excludes bypasses and link roads.

There are a total of 13 projects with physical progress of over 90 per cent, including the six-lane Delhi-Dehradun- Saharanpur Economic Corridor, Pkg-III. The work on this 25.5-km section in UP is 98 percent complete and its deadline is April 30.

A total of four packages of this economic corridor are being developed with April 30 as a deadline. The collective length in UP is 120 km, and the physical progress ranged from 75 to 98 per cent.

At least 73 percent physical progress has also been achieved in the six-laned greenfield Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway Pkg II. This 45.24-km road is being built at a cost of Rs 1,941 crore with a deadline of May. Half of the work on the first package of the expressway, measuring 18 km and with a deadline of July, has been completed so far.

The list of NH projects also includes the spur to Delhi-Mumbai Expressway that connects Jewar International Airport from DND-Faridabad-Ballabhgarh Bypass KMP Link. This road has a deadline of June.

“Development and maintenance of national highways (NH) is a continuous process. Work on these projects are accordingly taken up depending upon inter-se priority, traffic density and availability of funds to keep the national highways in traffic-worthy condition. The works are targeted for completion as per stipulated contract period after the appointed date,” Gadkari said in Parliament.
