A top engineer at Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) resigned after a flurry of his ‘racist’ social media posts against Indians resurfaced.

In the now-deleted posts, the DOGE staffer, Marko Elez, called on the people to “normalise Indian hate”, triggering global outrage and bringing Musk’s initiative under scrutiny.

Reports indicate that Elez has strong connections with Musk and worked as a software engineer at both X and SpaceX, companies owned by Musk.

The White House was informed about his posts, after which Elez resigned. At 25, he worked closely with the United States Treasury Department and had access to highly sensitive data, including the banking details of millions of Americans.

Musk Wants Him Back

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk launched a poll on his social media platform X on Friday, asking users whether a staffer from his DOGE team should be rehired after resigning from a Trump administration post due to the revelation of tweets promoting racism and eugenics.

“Bring back @DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now-deleted pseudonym?” Tesla CEO Musk wrote in a tweet, which carried the options “yes” and “no” for users to click on.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report his resignation, highlighting the numerous controversial posts he had made online. Among them was one posted in September 2024 that read, “Normalise Indian hate.”

In another post, Elez said that Indians in the US on H-1B visas are “going back don’t worry guys”. He has also made other controversial remarks: “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”

In yet another social media post, Elez targeted the previous US government over immigration policy and wrote, “I just want a eugenic immigration policy, is that too much to ask.”

Elez was a member of the US Treasury Department and one of two temporary members assigned to DOGE, an initiative designed to enhance government efficiency by reducing costs and eliminating fraud.
