The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma has opened up regarding the current status regarding the return of the pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah as the Men in Blue prepare themselves for the ODI series against England followed by the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.
The pacer currently is on a race against time as he battles on to return to fitness following India’s Test tour of Australia. He remains an indispensable member of the team with his stellar bowling displays, making him the best all-format pacer currently.
Rohit, during the pre-match press conference, revealed that the team management and selectors are awaiting the results regarding his scan and only then would they be able to shed some light regarding his availability.
“Obviously, we are waiting on some update about his scan and stuff which was due to happen in the next few days. Once we get that scan, we will be able to give you more clarity on where he is,” he shared.
Rohit Not Willing To Count Shami Out Just Yet
With Bumrah’s absence, Rohit remains keen on making his assessment regarding Mohammed Shami, who made his return to international cricket during the third T20I against England in Rajkot. He had been out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, which raised concerns regarding his form and fitness.
But the Indian captain reflected on the many times Shami has performed for the country and does not intend to judge the pacer quickly. Looking back at his playing days which goes back to well over a decade, Rohit hopes that his experience can come to the fray.
“He has not played cricket for 1 or 1.5 years. So, don’t judge the player so soon. He has been playing cricket for the last 10-12 years. He has performed for the team. You can see how he has bowled in the World Cup,” Rohit commented.
But at the same time, Rohit also hinted that his recent performances could be an indicator of whether he could get a start in the coming games and possibly the Champions Trophy matches as well. He does not intend on going back too far but staying in the present and making the best decision for the side.
“It is equally important for you as well as for us. Because we only see what has happened recently. But we don’t see what a person has done for a long time. Our memory is short. We don’t think much about what he has done in the last few years. What he has done 6-8 months ago. We only see what has happened recently. What has happened in the last series,” Rohit explained.
