The first few minutes of Rahul Gandhi’s speech left the government scratching its head. The Prime Minister was present to listen to him. Rahul Gandhi began by “appreciating the government’s efforts to generate growth” and he criticised both the previous UPA regime and the present NDA dispensation for failing to bring employment for all. In fact, he went further to praise the Skill India campaign of the PM.

But then the speech took a familiar and predictable turn. He declared the Skill India campaign a failure. Rahul Gandhi, as per the Bharatiya Janata Party, mentioned China 64 times. He kept attacking the government for a faulty foreign policy with the Chinese dragon looming large over India.

Some of his comments have been expunged, but for the BJP, yet another speech by the leader of the opposition has given it a chance to slam him and also the Congress, especially his comments on the Election Commission as well as questions over the Maharashtra poll results and voters. This coincides with the Congress setting up a committee with the name EAGLE. The Empowered Action Group of Leaders and Experts will keep a bird’s-eye view on elections. The committee is to meet for the first time on February 5.

Many feel that with the Aam Aadmi Party raising the issue of bogus voters in the national capital, Rahul Gandhi’s attack on the EC could be seen as one small concession to AAP, considering that the Congress has gone all out against Delhi’s ruling party ahead of the February 5 assembly polls.

But for the BJP, this constant questioning of the EC and accusing the government of dictating who the next Chief Election Commissioner would be is “an excuse kept ready as Congress knows it will do poorly in Delhi”.

Overall, Rahul Gandhi’s speech had fewer “embarrassing moments” like Abhay Mudra, which he had mentioned last time. He was also calmer, low on decibels, and less controversial. Sources said that Rahul Gandhi’s earlier speeches were perhaps not “LoP-like”, and this was the feedback from many INDIA bloc leaders. They felt his off-the-cuff remarks and reckless usage of words were bringing down the stature of his post and also that of the opposition.
