Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was accused of flirting with Prince William due to her frequent “hugs and kisses”, according to claims made by royal staff in a new book.
Royal expert Tom Quinn, in his book “Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants,” revealed an excerpt in The Times describing the tensions that arose between Meghan and other royal family members.
Staff members reported that Meghan had a “hug everyone” approach after joining the Royal Family. This led to awkward moments, particularly when Prince William, known for his reserved nature, flinched at her attempts at physical affection.
Despite Meghan’s natural inclination for hugs, her gestures often made her relatives uncomfortable.
Kate Middleton, the Prince of Wales, and King Charles would reportedly pull back when she went in for a hug, leaving Meghan feeling upset.
One staff member recalled to The Times that Meghan even joked about the seriousness of William and Charles, playfully commenting that Harry, her husband, seemed to be less serious.
However, it wasn’t just William who felt uneasy. On one occasion, Meghan reportedly tried to hug a royal aide, who pulled back awkwardly. This behaviour sparked rumours among staff that Meghan might be flirting with Prince William, but these claims were unfounded.
The frequent hugs and cheek kisses fuelled gossip, causing tension within the palace and deepening the rift between William and Harry.

“The hugging and cheek-kissing fuelled gossip among the staff that Meghan was flirting with William, which she was obviously not, but the tense atmosphere caused by all the touchy-feeliness (and the resultant gossip) deepened the rift between the brothers.
“In fact, William’s rather awkward, even inhibited personality — an inheritance from his father — was baffling for the more spontaneous Meghan.”
