No stranger to conflicts with courtside officials, Medvedev was at it again when he was given a time violation in the first set against Stan Wawrinka by chair umpire Adel Nour.
Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev was not happy with the umpire during his first-round match at the 2025 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. The 28-year-old locked horns with Stan Wawrinka on February 4 in Centre Court. No stranger to conflicts with courtside officials, Medvedev was at it again when he was given a time violation in the first set. It led to the tennis star lashing out at chair umpire Adel Nour.
Tennis Letter has now shared a glimpse of Medvedev’s war of words with the umpire on X, formerly Twitter, “Daniil Medvedev to the umpire in his match against Stan Wawrinka in Rotterdam: ‘You don’t have eyes, huh?’” the post read.
Medvedev was on his way to a love hold against Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday. A delay followed, with a ball girl seemingly failing to give Medvedev the balls in time. This led to chair umpire Adel Nour issuing a time violation at 5-5, 40-0, for taking too long between points. The Russian star didn’t agree with the penalty, making his frustrations known to the umpire from the bench as he wiped himself off with a towel.
“Why are you giving me a time violation? You have some problems. The ball girl didn’t give me the ball. Do you see? Open your eyes,” Medvedev said.
“You’re so bad. I remember with Karen Khachanov (2020 European Open). I remember you don’t have eyes. You have a problem. You guys are absolute rubbish every match,” he added.
In the same rant, Medvedev asked the match umpire to do better and put more thought into his decisions. “I was calm, but you’re searching for trouble man. You have some actual deep problems. I didn’t talk to you. I don’t say anything. And then you act like this… You have some problems man. Open your eyes. Open your brain. I know you’re just sitting there, but think a little more. Come on, give me energy,” he concluded.
Wawrinka eventually went on to win the first set 7-6 (8). Medvedev, however, completed a successful comeback to win the second and third sets 6-4 and 6-1, respectively. The number 2 seed at the 2025 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam has failed to win a title since the 2023 Italian Open. He recently featured at the 2025 Australian Open where his controversial acts in first and second-round matches saw him being slapped with a significant fine.
